Comic books have been popular for decades now. Every one of us has grown with them, though it must be said that with the advent of other forms of entertainment, the comic book reading habit is on the wane. With many other options available like television, Internet, video games, and CDs, children have more options than before. Regardless, comic books and their protagonists continue to be popular among kids and adults alike. The testimony to their popularity is the number of comic heroes, who have been given life in Hollywood blockbusters. Spiderman, Superman, Punisher, Batman? You name it and these superheroes have been successful in their reel version.

Like comic books, comic book stores, too, can be found almost everywhere. A good comic book will store hundreds, if not thousands, of comics to choose from. One can locate them quite easily, with many of them serving generations of families. You can also shop for comic books online. Online stores stock up thousands of comics. One can get bundled offers in the form of games along with comic books. Some comic book stores also sell comics in the digital format, which are easy to use and sometimes interactive. Comic book stores were perhaps at their peak during the "golden age of comics," during the 1940s and 50s, when many of the superheroes made their debut through comics. Although one can shop for comics online, going to a comic shop to buy comics still has takers and has got its own charm about it.

You can also shop for comic books at comic cons, which are normally one-three day events where comic book dealers trade in a city. Comic cons were popular during the 1970s but with the increase in Internet usage, and therefore, sales of comic books via the Internet, they are not as popular as they used to be.

Comics have a certain charm with them, especially if it tells a good story. Good stories can be adapted to many media. Good stories also draw us into the characters and their situations. We can relate to them. We can learn from the ways characters fail or succeed in dealing with their circumstances. With the recent release of the classic Watchmen, people can see that comic books can be of great quality and not just some cheap attempt to short tell a good book.

I imagine just about everyone, at some point in their life, has read at least one comic book. In fact, even if you haven't read one, you probably have watched a movie about superheroes. Many leaped to film successfully, such as Batman, Spider-Man and the X-Men, and attracted audiences that don't read comics. Each movie has created its own fan base, sometimes separate from the comic book itself. However, those that were really drawn to the movie and can't wait for the sequel go into the hobby of collecting actual comic books

However, comic book reading can take out a bit of your time and money. New comic books are released every week and for an average reader, who reads anywhere from 5 to 30 comic books weekly, it does take a chunk of your time and your allowance. I have experienced this situation before when I was still a student. Back then comic scans where non-existent and I had to buy each comic book that I liked every week otherwise I feel like I'm falling behind. Even with comic scans, though you might save money, it will still intrude in your busy life especially if all you like is to know what's happening.

Comic books are one of the greatest items that people collect.  Not only because they remind us all of our childhood but also because they have a lot of value to them.  When you have a comic collection one of the best things you can do is to have them graded.  Having those books graded means that you send them to a comic grading authentication company that evaluated your comics. For example, they will look at what series it is, what issue, and the condition of the issue.  After examining all of these factors they will gave your vintage comic book a grade anywhere from one to ten, ten being the highest. 

One of the most common comic grading companies that people prefer to use is CGC.  Of course you will have to pay for your comic books to get graded.  The major benefit to grading them is that you will be increasing their value.  For instance, if you are not planning to sell any of your collection that you have and you are just keeping them for yourself then there isn't a reason for you to grade them.  However if you are planning to sell them now or in the future, it is smart of you to grade them because when people are looking to buy comics they often want to buy ones that are graded. 

Finally if you want to save some money you can grade your comic books yourself but the only problem is that if you don't have any knowledge or the experience required to grade these rare and hard to find books then you will do a poor job.  Buy if you still want to give it a try then you can do as much research online as you possibly can and learn how to grade your own comics.
